It's been too long...

Summer is over, winter is coming. Here are some movie reviews for you to mull over!

Grown Ups 2: Underrated. Ridiculous in parts but Adam Sandler proves he still has it when it comes to movies. Very funny with a great cast.
4 Stars ****
<3  'There's a raft in there?' *pulls cord* 'who did that?''<3

2 Guns: There was never any doubt that this would anything but witty, action packed and clever. With a cast made up of Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington it was bound to be good. Thoroughly entertaining. 4 Stars ****
<3 Wahlberg's wink <3

We're the Millers: Outrageously funny, I couldn't breathe in parts. Jennifer Aniston looks amazing in her underwear and Jason Sudeikis is hilarious! Definitely one to store in the DVD/Blu-ray collection! 5 Stars *****
<3 'watch out for bears, you won't be able to see them' <3
<3 'roman candle' <3
<3 The Fireworks <3

Saving Mr Banks: I was lucky enough to see a preview of this upcoming film starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks. If you are a fan of Mary Poppins and a true Brit then this film is for you. Suitable for the whole family it certainly tugs on the heart strings. An absolute gem that is sure to do well in the box office. 5 Stars *****

<3 Penguins <3
<3 Emma Thompson <3

Dead Man Down: An original and refreshing take on revenge. I am a big fan of Noomi Rapace and Colin Farrell so I was expecting to enjoy this anyway. 3.5 Stars ****
<3 Darcy <3

Byzantium: Not even slightly what I expected. A traditional vampire story told in modern-ish times. I felt it was quite flat, uneventful and colourless. Disappointing. 1 Star *
<3 Daniel Mays <3

Machete Kills: Nowhere near the standard of the first. This film tries FAR too hard to be cheesy and ludicrous. Machete worked despite the cheese but this dreadful sequel isn't worth the time. We didn't actually make it through the whole viewing and left with about 45 minutes still left to go. 0 Stars

Turbo: I wasn't expecting much from this given the time of year it's been released and the predictable story line. Unfortunately for me everything has been done before so the originality has to come from somewhere else. The creators of Turbo managed this task. I enjoyed everything from the artwork to the soundtrack. 4 Stars ****
<3 Chet <3

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: With the array of foodimals on show this film had a lot of potential. The foodimals pulled through but the film did not. with the addition of 'live corp' boss Steve (who resembled Steve Jobs at Apple quite a bit) the film lost it's uniqueness and sense of fun. I was truly disappointed! 2 Stars **
<3 The Marshmallows <3
<3 Barry <3

Thor: The Dark World: In a word- awful. There were parts of the movie I liked but on the whole I thought it made viking Gods appear as cheesy, useless aliens who can't decide if they want to help the people of Earth or not. The entire story grated on me and if it wasn't for the superb acting from Christopher Eccleston and Tom Hiddleston I probably would have left early. Alas, I stayed so I could fully review the film for you but I'm sorry Marvel fans, it doesn't look good. 2 Stars **
<3 Idris Elba and his golden eyes <3
<3 Loki <3

Escape Plan: Turn your mind off and enjoy the action. There is a decent story line to boot! With Arnie and Stallone taking front and centre this film is exactly as you'd expect but with unexpected twists. Thoroughly entertaining. 3.5 Stars ****
<3 Arnie <3

Riddick: Disastrous. Almost identical to Pitch Black, there was no point in making this film other than to extort more money from people and show that Vin Diesel has still got it (which he most definitely does). However it proved a waste of time viewing and I will never recover that spent time. 0 Stars.
<3 Vin Diesel's Dog <3

Pain and Gain: Bazaar. This film was like nothing I've ever seen before. Unfortunately the odd qualities didn't really work in the film's favour. It was a mash of comedy, real life and action that blew up creating a mess of laughable, body building maniacs. I would state that to understand my review you should watch the film but it is far too long and I'm not really sure you should. A very confused 2 Stars **
<3 Anthony Mackie <3

Place Beyond the Pines: Another film that didn't deliver. The beginning was promising but the film was slow and I soon lost interest. I have never been a big fan of Eva Mendes and I certainly wasn't a fan of Bradley Cooper's son but my own personal opinions aside this film wasn't as clever as it thought. 1 Star *
<3 Ryan Gosling (obviously) <3

****SPOILER ALERT****

A cult classic? I'm not sure.

The story is desperately sad. McAvoy plays a drug fueled detective hell bent on receiving a promotion at work. He sets about setting all the other candidates up for a fall, therefore giving him a clear path to the top. Presented as a know it all Scottish stallion with a finger in every pie it becomes quickly clear that not all is as it seems.
It is evident from quite early on that the situation with his wife isn't as he makes out to colleagues. The reasons, thus far, are unclear. The deeper he plays into his own game the more the audience realise Bruce (McAvoy) is seriously messed up.
Bruce is not a likeable character. He is twisted, sex obsessed and cruel. Further into the story it becomes apparent that his condition is becoming out of control. He begins having visions which help explain his predicament. From the odd scenes, reminiscent of Twin Peaks in parts, the audience are informed of his early childhood and how the death of his younger brother occurred.
Eventually the true nature surrounding the crime he is investigating comes to light. It was at this point of the film I felt it spiraled into serious strangeness.
Not only has Bruce's wife left him but he cannot remember why. This point is never fully explained. Conclusions could be that he was always sex-fueled and cheated, that perhaps his drug addiction started before the break-up or the possibility that the situation with his brother messed him up for day one. Otherwise there could be another reason not revealed.
The sessions with the doctor are also unclear, did they truly happen but are shown in a warped version of Bruce's reality? A lot of the film is unclear and odd. Full of sex, a little violence, swearing and drugs. Does this make it cult? I think not. It attempts to push boundaries and succeeds but there are so many other films that do the same and are not classed as cult. Despite my arguments about the style of the film what it really boils down to is whether I enjoyed it. I wanted to understand, to find out what had made Bruce so cracked. But alas, this was not to be. In the end Filth gets a mediocre 3 Stars ***

Batfleck controversy

Considering the reaction the news about Ben Affleck doning the batsuit has caused I thought I should post about it too.
Nothing like jumping on the band wagon!

It seems to have hit a nerve, most social networkers appear to hate the decision and keyboard warrior hate for Affleck has comensed.
Personally, I think people loved films such as
Argo, Dogma, Paycheck, The Town etc. And I'm pretty sure directors choose people based on their own experience and knowledge of the industry. Look what happened when Anne Hathaway was cast as Catwoman. Everybody stopped and said 'what?' But it totally worked, she nailed it!
So, all you doubters, firstly: are you a director? No, I thought not.
Secondly, are you an actor? No, sorry youtube videos do not count.
And finally, at least give him a chance! Get off your high horse and stop pretending to know what's to come. If it's bad it doesn't necessarily mean it was down to Affleck. If it's brilliant I'll watch you all eat your words (or pretend like you secretly thought it was a good idea in the first place).
Mr Affleck probably doesn't care what we think because he's making money, he's batman and 'any press is good press'!

Kick-Ass 2

Well, this film certainly did NOT disappoint! An explosion of action, emotion, homemade comic-book costumes and swearing.
I do hope they make a Kick-Ass 3 and fans come to the cinema dressed as their own super heroes/villains! Beats the twilight fans that came in with glitter on their faces :/
Anyway, back to the subject of comic book meets hollywood genius! I admit I was expecting a lot and as I have proven countless times with past reviews this often equals disappointment. My expectations can sometimes be too high and are not met. Kick-Ass 2 does not fall into that category. Although completely and utterly different it falls into the same slot as Man of Steel in the way that they both absolutely blew me away.
The original line up alongside tight fitting spandex and heightened comedy, throw in some teenage hormones, Jim Carey, John Leguizamo and Mother Russia and BOOM! One hundred and three minutes of movie heaven. There are, as expected from the first film, some rather serious and shocking moments which only adds to the overall impact.
If I had to have one moan (and it pains me to do this but I am a critic) it would be that the tension between Hit Girl and Kick-Ass builds and builds and ultimately amounts to nothing.
We want more lust...not romance though, that's for sissies. But that's just me being super picky. As you've probably noticed, I loved it and profess that everyone should watch it. If you haven't seen the first one...go catch up, you're missing out.

The Wolverine

At the end of this film somebody said to me that there weren't very many mutants involved. I think that just about sums it up.
If you are looking for an X-Men movie, this isn't it. Which the title does tell you.
If you are looking for two hours of Hugh Jackman and muscle mania then you may have picked the right film.
The fight scenes were brutal, bloody and aggressive, exactly as they should be! Wolverine was still as angry and feral as always but...
....and yes there is a 'but'.
The romance was pointless and I actually felt sorry for the ninja who didn't 'get the girl'. The mutants introduced weren't the most inventive (and the lizard lady [a.k.a Viper] was basically just Poison Ivy). Viper leaves a lot to be desired. She was unnecessarily evil, and not even for personal gain. Along with that the story line in general was weak. Everything was just a bit wishy washy. The Wolverine is clearly nothing more than a stepping stone to the next big X-Men film (which hopefully will show more time and effort have been put in).

Love for...

In my future reviews I will be incorporating a second judging system. Along with the star rating I will now be adding <3 ('love for') to zone in on a particular element or scene I loved during the movie. It's all just for fun but you can really get an idea for what I like to see or what I am impressed by in a film.

Parker: Lackluster towards the end, felt rushed to finish. The whole film was based around revenge and once it came to it the action could have been better, especially by Jason Statham's standards. J-Lo played a decent role but the lack of romance was frustrating. As usual Statham's American accent didn't hit the mark. He's done better but I believe this was poorly written rather than poorly acted. I wanted more blood, more fights and more sex.
<3 knife through hand shot <3
1 Star *

Frozen Ground: One of Nicholas Cage's better acting performances, John Cusack's role was also executed brilliantly. The film itself was a slow burner and again felt rushed towards the end when everything falls into place a little too quickly. Vanessa Hudgens over sold this part, swearing unnecessarily and trying too hard to prove she can be something other than a disney channel child star. Intriguing because it's based on true events the film is disturbing but lacked any real brutality.
2 Stars **

Identity Thief: Laugh out loud funny, echos of Due Date, entertaining and incredibly silly. I was surprised by Jason Bateman, usually his characters really irritate me in some ay but I warmed to him much more in this role.
<3 throat punches <3
3.5 Stars ****

Monsters University: Not as good as the first one, it was inevitable! A feel good family friendly fun film with loveable characters and a heart warming story. As with Monsters Inc the story is very strong but I felt the comedy lacked a little because of that in this prequel.
<3 the slug & falling disco ball <3
3 Stars ***

Despicable Me 2: The minions return an they are in full force! Again the first one will always be one of a kind but this sequel is a commendable follow up. The world is in danger once again and Gru is involved as usual, but this time he's on the right side. Juggling saving the world with his three girls and a new partner everything seems to be going wrong. Lots of laughs, great animation and minions. What more could you ask for? (More 3D, more Agnes and more gadgets?) Good but not great.
<3 'sorry didn't see you there', 'didn't see you again' <3
<3 'my momma wipes my boogas' <3
3.5 Stars ****

Jack the Giant Slayer: A thoroughly family film. A dose of action, a drop of cheese and some pretty nifty CGI stirred together with a splash of romance and heroism. Exactly what you'd expect. Not really my cup of tea but not unbearable.
<3 Bill Nighy's voice <3
3 Stars ***

I Love You Phillip Morris: I knew what this film was about, I knew it was based on true events, I knew the cast and yet it totally surprised me. Odd, funny and completely outrageous in parts. Jim Carey and Ewan Mcgregor prove their versatility in acting.
<3 Rodrigo Santoro <3
2.5 Stars ***

The Conjuring: One of the BEST horror films of 2013. Packed full of old school tension and creepy music. Another script based on true events making it all the more terrifying. The actual haunting comes in early but is slow in progression. Brilliant build up and the ending doesn't disappoint. Definitely worth a watch...just maybe not on your own!
<3 Vera Farmiga <3
<3 Joey King's convincing terror <3
5 Stars *****

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters: Before I go any further, I have not seen Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which may effect my judgement. However *insert huge sigh* this was a complete and utter waste of my life. I hated every minute of it from the terrible acting to the horrendous plot line right up to the portrayal of mystical beings. As a fan of mythology I am ashamed to have made my eyes subject to this monstrosity of cinema.
And what kind of a name is Percy, really? It's 2013 for goodness sake!
0 Stars, nope, not one.

Only God Forgives: Ryan Gosling delivers once again. I love films such as Oldboy and other Tartan Asian films and admit apprehension in viewing an American take on the style. I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed the viewing experience...now to watch this Drive everyones so mad about!
<3 Ryan Gosling (let's face it, which girl doesn't?) <3

Pacific Rim

I have found it incredibly hard to review this film.
The first time I watched Pacific Rim it was in 2D. The credits began to role and I had a great big grin on my face. Unfortunately, on the way home myself, my sister and my fiance began to pick it apart. So, there was only one thing for it- we had to watch it again. And so we did, in 3D this time. Once the credits rolled for a second time I decided that I loved the film and any criticism was merely nit-picking. However, I will say save your money and watch it in 2D as the 3D didn't add anything extra.

On one hand the film has serious themes. World wide war, alien invasion, human sacrifice, revenge, death and doomsday. Pretty heavy stuff. Idris Elba gives the performance of his life, selling it as a army general! Add to all that the awesome Jaegers (huge ass robots), the ugly looking aliens (Kaiju), the amazing fight scenes between the aforementioned beasties and the stunning graphics this film was a huge success.
On the other hand the film was pure cheese. It was difficult to take the Australian characters seriously when they were angry because of their accents, the two scientists (Newt and Herman) were outrageously funny and Ron Pearlman was the icing on the cake. All made for a good laugh.
While both areas worked alone pairing the ever serious Idris Elba with cheesy 'lol' moments I struggled to decide whether it worked. In the end I was glad there was no solid romance (just hints) because I feel that would have spoiled everything. I am also in two minds about Charlie Hunnam's transition to the big screen (we'll have to wait and see what his next role is like!).

On the whole, everything worked. A roller coaster of emotions. Definitely worth watching if you love robots, Idris Elba, films about the apocalypse or just a decent action movie with plenty of braun. I would also suggest watching it more than once (if you can afford it) as there is a lot going on and I picked up on things the second time round I'd missed before. Including a scene after the credits, very short but it's there!

Now You See Me

Magic and entertainment have never been so magically entertaining. New age tricks with state of the art contraptions and technology make Now You See Me visually breath taking and incredibly modern. There was a sceptical part of me wondering if it would involve old school rabbits in hats and people escaping from tanks and while those items are featured the advanced tricks will leave you stunned.
Everything about this film is clever and precise. There are a few trade secrets spilled but some tricks are kept quiet and leave the viewers pondering 'how did they do that?'. Along with all the brilliant effects the story line is great. I have to admit a little disappointment on the romance front, it was unnecessary and weak. Without the added kissing and hand holding the film would have worked just as well, if not better.
While the posters brag Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine they keep quiet Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo and rapper Common. Amongst the cast, costumes and stage magic there are a number of laugh out loud moments, intense action and a little bit of history and mythology thrown in.
Now You See Me has shed a new light on magic and illusion. A tremendously well crafted and meticulously executed film with special effects to knock your socks off!

World War Z

All I heard about WWZ before viewing was 'nothing like the book', 'poorly made', and 'don't bother'. Unfortunately for you opinionated folks I like to make up my own mind. However, that doesn't necessarily mean I disagree. Perhaps if I'd been allowed complete darkness about WWZ I would have gone in with higher expectations. As it happened I really didn't expect much.
I believe the appropriate reaction to this film would be 'meh'. I didn't hate it, certainly not as much as I'd been led to believe I would, yet I do not intend to ever view it again.
I have recently discovered that some 3D films work far better on a smaller scale. Watching Dredd from the comfort of my sofa with my awesome 3D shades on completely surpassed the viewing experience at the cinema (which was fairly epic in itself). World War Z will never have the chance to prove it's worth as a 3D film because I shall not be purchasing or renting or borrowing or watching it ever again.

If you decided to pen a zombie movie, what would you need?
Some zombies would come in handy, a heroic main character the audience will hope survives, some victims, a journey and perhaps a reason for the rise of undead.
Oh look, you've just written every zombie movie ever made! Well done you!
It seems difficult to make zombies new or different. I Am Legend made them smarter, Shaun of the Dead made them comical and Warm Bodies made them emotional. World War Z hasn't gone the extra mile regardless of CGI zombies. In parts the infected were so ridiculous I actually laughed out loud. Other undead films have showcased more gore, more tension, more action and more plot.

Brad Pitt and Daniella Kertesz were on top form, I only wish Kertesz's character Segen could have been introduced earlier and had more of a central role. Alongside their commendable performances I warmed to Tomas (Fabrizio Zacharee Guido) and the Camp Humphreys soldiers. There was also one particular moment when I jumped so much I left my chair. Other than those few points I felt it lacked any real drive or direction. My brain was left suggesting ways in which it could be improved. Whilst writing this review I find myself thinking 'perhaps they could have expanded that idea' but I was not left wanting more at the time.
The film was disappointing but not a total disaster.

Flash review

Bullet to the Head: Disappointing, the concept has been done before, and better. I was expecting a lot more from Stallone and Momoa. 2 Stars **

Star Trek: Jumpy, not as smooth as expected. Watched solely because the advert for the up coming sequel looks amazing, hopefully it will outshine it's predecessor. 2 Stars
**

Star Trek: Into Darkness: My hopes were not shattered! Benedict Cumberbatch, special effects and a great story make this an anomaly- a set in which I prefer the sequel! 4 Stars ****

The Croods: An excellent family film, another brilliant animation with potential to continue such as Ice Age and Madagascar have. Witty, heart warming and aesthetically beautiful! 4 Stars ****

G.I.Joe: Retaliation: Although unfortunate that Channing Tatum doesn't appear throughout this was still a successful sequel. Action packed, witty in places and great use of slow motion fight scenes. There were, however, a lot of cheesy moments and Bruce Willis' cameo was short lived and fairly pointless. 3 Stars
***

Les Miserables: Beautiful. Expertly executed, exceptionally acted. 5 Stars *****

Django: Witty, clever and with a perfect balance of action and story. Hopefully a cult classic in the future. 5 Stars *****

Olympus has Fallen: Superb! Gerard Butler seems to be back on the ladder to the top! 4 Stars ****

Evil Dead: A disaster. Cheesy to the point of no return, ridiculous and rushed. This is the movie Cabin in the Woods mocks. At two points I felt there was potential for a decent movie: the tree scene (die hard original ED fans will not be disappointed), and the hyperventilated breathing by the girl in the woods. Therefore, half a star for each moment. 1 Star *

Lords of Salem: Unfortunately Rob Zombie appears to have lost his touch. This odd and creepy addition to his work left a lot to be desired. From the little I read, the book seems much more violent and gruesome. 1 Star *

Admission: Witty, moving and easy to watch. Since Role Models Paul Rudd has done OK films, never quite reaching the height of comedy he rode in on, this follows suit. Tina Fey surprises and there are a few good laugh out loud moments. 3 Stars ***

The Iceman: Cool, slick and harsh. Reminiscent of classic mob films with a surprising cast! My only criticism would be footage from Kuklinski himself could have enhanced the true story vibe! 3.5 Stars ****

Epic: The title is misleading. There was nothing epic about this animation. Some of the characters were brilliant (especially the slugs!) but were lost in a rather pointless and disappointing story line. 2.5 Stars ***

Hangover 3: Hilarious! Back on form although nothing will ever compare to that initial film this came close and smashed the predictable sequel out of the water! The Wolf Pack delivered! 4 Stars ****

Man of Steel

Superman has never held a pole position when it comes to my favourite super heroes. In fact, I've always been a fan of the villains. The characters and costumes always seemed more appealing. Despite good prevailing heroes such as Superman, Spiderman and Batman just didn't do it for me.
When I was growing up I did watch a number of episodes of Superman on television and often felt that anyone fooled by a pair of thick rimmed glasses was ultimately too stupid to consider as a real character. When Smallville hit our screens in 2001 I was curious and sat down to a few episodes but never felt the 'hook' catch. Due to my dismissal of this superhero I skipped viewing Superman Returns (2006).
A teaser trailer for Man of Steel cropped up and without giving much away told me all I needed to know, it was another superhero film based on my least favourite 'alien'. Subsequently, I forgot all about it until the posters began to pop up. An avid fan of modern cinema it dawned on me that perhaps special effects and a revamp could give Superman the push he needed into the twenty first century. Along with the appearance of a familiar face advertising the reinvented Clark Kent I was compelled by a nagging curiosity.
Immortals was undeniably my favourite film of 2011. Recognising Henry Cavill my interest in and reason for watching Man of Steel changed. Sitting in a large leather chair in a pair of oversized plastic glasses I was content that even if I hated the film I would enjoy two hours of Mr Cavill. The certificate vanished, the list of important people and companies came and went and then... I was gone.
Sucked into a world on the path to destruction the opening scene throws you into the thick of Krypton with Russell Crowe as a guide. An epic explosive explanation of the planet ensued. Although a bold statement I have no issue in writing that Man of Steel has one of the best opening scenes I have ever witnessed. And believe me, the rest of the film does not waver. Heart pounding I drank up the visual feast before my eyes as though they'd been closed for too long and gone dry. The action starts and doesn't stop until the credits roll. Intense, captivating and consuming; everything comes together exquisitely.
The cast do not disappoint in their deliverance. Henry Cavill has secured his name as one to be remembered. His face will be plastered over teenage girls bedroom walls and diaries. Superman will be the nations new favourite, despite solid attempts from Christian Bale and Andrew Garfield.
For the male audience I would put my money on Faora-Ul (Antje Traue) taking the lead over Lois Lane. The jet black, figure hugging outfit paired with her furious nature make for a smoldering combination. Again, reiterating that villains have it better.
Recently on screen as notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, Michael Shannon swaps his dapper suit for a Gears of War inspired suit of armour. Jumping worlds he retains his lack of empathy for the human race. General Zod (Shannon) and his ever changing beard are another factor to consider in the battle between hero and villain. The fight scenes between General Zod and Superman are nothing short of incredible. Just when you think neither man can give any more they punch back with another attack more violent and destructive than the previous. By the end of this film my stomach and temples were aching from the constant tensing the muscles beneath had endured.
Man of Steel has raised the bar on superhero movies. Any film waiting patiently to be released in 2013 should be quaking in it's reel. If, like me, you are unsure I urge you to go anyway, pay whatever you need to pay because this film will be on everyone's lips for some time. You will not want to miss out on giving your opinion, even if you disagree with my ravings! So, films of 2013- you have big boots to fill!

P.s. Look out for the mention of 'Lex Corp' all you Superman fans, these eagle eyes did not miss it! ;)

1,041 and counting...

Recently, I decided my spare time would be well spent making a list of all the films I've ever seen. I know, I need a new hobby...
Regardless of how depressing it would be to add up all the hours I've spent in front of a television of cinema screen I am proud of my list! With a staggering one thousand and forty one titles so far I think it's safe to say I am an addict!
