Cabin In the Woods

If you enter the cinema with a horror movie in mind, you are wrong. If you have ben told there is an almighty twist and you would never see it coming, the person who told you is blind. If you've been told it's cheesy, rubbish and a waste of money, only half of this is true.
Cabin in the Woods is unique, it is cheesy (in a good way) and if you open your mind to what Joss Whedon and his team achieved you may love it. I am fully aware it isn't everyones cup of tea but I implore you to find out for yourself and drop all previous thoughts of what it might be or how it may end.

Firstly the horror movie. Yes there are elements of horror in this film, some would say they are collected from a selection of the greatest horror movies known, and put together in a very clever way. I was impressed by the stereotypical choices for America and Japan (you will understand once you've seen it!). Secondly the almighty twist. What a load of b***s***. Right from the opening credits there are clues as to what is going on. Then as soon as they arrive there are more clues, these clues mount up and up. Some may argue, yes there are clues but it could be argued that (close you eyes now if you do not want this twist spoilt) they are just being killed for a snuff movie or there is a hostel-like element and people are paying to see them frightened. I agree this could be argued, unless you open your eyes and truly watch the movie, every time someone dies blood in poured into statue outlines, one of the two men controlling the dome kisses a necklace and prays about half way through the film. No it is not altogether obvious how it will end but if you pay attention you will definitely have an idea where it is going. Thirdly the amount of cheese and the waste of money. The cheesy element to this film makes it funny, this is definitely a black comedy by all accounts. If you feel you have wasted your money, then you have solely because you have not appreciated this display of imagination nor have you fully committed to enjoying the film.

If you want to watch a scary movie pull out a copy of Insidious, if you want to see something shocking go and find an asian horror called Audition but if you want to see a black comedy don't reach for The Cottage, no put that down. Watch Cabin in the Woods, it is a reinvention of Cabin Fever
(which I loved for one conversation:
Bert: I'm gonna go shoot some squirrels
Paul: Why would you wanna shoot squirrels
Bert: 'cause they're gay)
Less about that though, this movie is also packed with remarkably funny one liners and witty comments, such as "He has a husbands bulge" which in context will make you howl. It wasn't awesome, it was a hell of a lot better than people made out, therefore it was good and worth watching at least once to encounter Joss Whedon's mind.
